Dallas County Constable Corruption Case Goes To Grand Jury
Wednesday, December 1st, 2010An investigation by the Dallas Morning news has raised questions about constables towing practices, campaign fundraising, off duty business relationships, SWAT teams and the unprecedented expansion of their traffic enforcement duties. A special investigation ordered last year by county commissioners concluded that Cortes office was rife with corruption. The investigator, former FBI agent Danny Defenbaugh, said in his reports that Evans and Cortes may have abused their offices by requiring their deputies to fund their reelection campaigns by selling raffle tickets or buying the tickets themselves.
Campaign irregularities in those two constable precincts go back 13 or 14 years. County Judge Jim Foster, a former deputy constable said he was relieved to hear the matter is finally coming to a resolution. He also added that he expects indictments will be handed down.
