Husband of Kendale teacher accused of having sex with students stands up for her

Saturday, May 21st, 2011

The husband of Kendale teacher accused of having sex with 5 of the school’s students boldly voiced support for his wife Thursday.

With a forlorn Britnni Nicole Colleps standing a few feet behind him, Christopher Colleps said he remained committed to his wife of seven years.

“I loved her since the moment I layed eyes on her over 11 years ago and I will always love her,” Christopher Colleps said, reading from a prepared statement. “I have always supported her, and I will continue to support my wife throughout this entire ordeal. I hope that you will not pass judgement on her because you dont know all of the facts or details according to this situation.”

Brittni Colleps, 27, faces five felony counts of having inappropriate relationship with a student. She is free on a $125,000 bond that Christopher Colleps paid after raising money from famiy and friends, her attorney said.

Police say the mother of three had sex in April and May at her Arlington home with five students from the school, where she was a first year English teacher and coach of the freshman girls basketball team. Police say they have video tape of at least one encounter.

All five students were 18 years or older. At least one of them was a student in Colleps’ class. State law forbids sex between a teacher and any student at that teachers school, regardless of the age of the student.

Brittni Colleps was placed on leave with pay last week after after the allegations surfaced, but Kenndale ISD Superintendent Gary Dugger said Thursday that she had already turned in her resignation in March. He said that resignation was set to become official Friday- the last day of regular classes.

According to WFAA-TV (channel 8 ), one of the students and the mother of another student have said they have no desire to press charges against Colleps. The mother said she is praying that things “turn out for the best” for Colleps and her family.

Brittni Colleps did not speak during or after her husband’s two minute statement to media representatives at the Brookside Center in Hurst.

Christopher Colleps concluded by describing his wife as a “loving mother” who “continuously puts our children’s best interest before her own.”

The couple, accompanied by Brittni Colleps mother, did not take questions and left the center immediately after Christopher Colleps read his statement.

Lex Johnson, Brittni Colleps’ Hurst-based attorney, remained behind. He said Christopher Colleps, who is on active duty with the army and stationed in Louisiana, decided to speak out because he “wants everybody to know” that he supports his wife despite of the serious charges against her.

The lawyer also acknowledged that Arlington police searched the Colleps’ home Tuesday, but he would neither confirm or deny whether his client had sex with the students. He also declined to say what type of defense strategy he might use if Tarrant County prosecutors decide to accept the case.

Johnson said twice that there were “more important things going on around the world,” and urged the news to turn their attention to those issues rather than focusing on Brittni Colleps, who he said would have nothing to say about her case “for the foreseeable future.”

“At the present time, she is not saying anything,” the lawyer said. “Before she makes any statement, I want to have all the fats of the case, and I don’t have that yet.”

Teachers at Irving MacArthur, North Garland high schools accused of sexual contact with students

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Two North Texas high school teachers – one in Garland, the other in Irving – were arrested Wednesday, accused by police of having sexual affairs with students.

Christian Michael Flores, a science teacher and coach at North Garland High, was charged with one count of improper relationship between student and teacher and one count of indecency with a child after police say he confessed to having sexual contact with a female student four times.

April St. John Alexander, a former biology teacher at MacArthur High in Irving, was charged with one count of inappropriate relationship between student and teacher after police say she had sex with a male student more than 20 times during a three month period.

The arrests came only days after a Kendale High School teacher was accused by police of having sex with five students at her Arlington home.

“When we send our kids to school, we trust they are in safe hands and that it is a safe zone,” said Garland police spokesman Joe Harn. “When something like this happens, it violates that trust.”

Garland ISD spokesman Chris Moore said a student informed officials about Flores’ alleged inappropriate contact earlier this week and that the investigation was quickly turned over to police. When confronted by police, Flores confessed, according to an arrest affidavit.

Flores, 27, of Lavon told police that he started texting a student in Spring 2009. At the time, the girl was a 15 year old freshman, police said.

Flores said he then had sexual contact with the girl four times over the next two years, the most recent encounter in April or May of this year, at the girls home in Garland, police documents state.

Flores, who could not be reached for comment, has been a teacher at North Garland High since August 2006. He also helped coach the basketball and football teams.

Moore says Flores has been placed in administrative leave with pay.

In Irving, police say Alexander, a 26 year old from Halton city, started a relationship with a 16 year old student at MacArthur High in 2009.

The student, now 18, told police that he and the teacher had sex approximately 25 times – both at the school and Alexander’s car – from October to December of that year, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

Irving police said they learned of the alleged relationship in March of this year, when they were investigating a separate but similar allegation against Alexander.

Alexander, who could not be reached for comment, taught at MacArthur from October 2008 until her resignation last November. Irving ISD spokesman Tony Tethford said Alexander did not explain why she was resigning.

Both Alexander and Flores were released from jail Thursday on bail.

Man accused of imprisoning former neighbor in sexual torture chamber arraigned in Parker County

Friday, May 20th, 2011

More than two months after being arrested on charges that he imprisoned a woman in a sexual torture chamber, Jeffrey Allan Maxwell finally got a lawyer.

Maxwell, 58, appeared in the Parker County district courthouse Wednesday morning to be arraigned on two charges of aggravated sexual assault and one of aggravated kidnapping. He could face life in prison if found guilty.

All the charges stem from March 12, when Texas Rangers and Parker County Sheriff’s deputies rescued a 62 year old former neighbor of Maxwell’s from his Corsicana house. The father or two is also suspected in the disappearance of his second wife, Martha Martinez Maxwell, when the couple lived in Fort Worth 19 years ago.

At 6-foot-3 and 256 pounds, Maxwell towered over two officers who led him through the courtroom in chains and grey prison stripes. He told Judge Trey Loftin he understood the charges.

When Maxwell last appeared in the courthouse, to request a court-appointed attorney in March, the judge sent him into the backroom with a phone book. He said Maxwell, who in recent years reportedly lived on disability checks and a settlement from a motorcycle accident, has about $200,000 in property and other assets, enough to hire his own lawyer.

“Have you?” the judge asked Wednesday.

“Not yet,” said Maxwell.

“Why not?”

Maxwell thought for a moment. “Because, um, I don’t have the cash. And I’d have to sell my house before I hired them.”

The judge became stern, “Your right to have an attorney is very important,” he said. “But not so important it will slow down justice. Do you know that?”

“Not really,” said Maxwell, sounding confused.

“The court feels you are obstructing justice by not hiring an attorney,” said the judge. “The law requires you to hire that attorney.”

After warning Maxwell that the county could sue him to force him to hire a lawyer, the judge instead appointed Richard Alley as a “conditional” attorney.

The judge said Alley would help Maxwell sell off a tract of land, some stocks, and even personal property to help pay for his defense, a process that must be completed in 20 days or Maxwell will waive his right to an attorney.

If there was any money left over after jail, the judge said, Maxwell would get it back.

Maxwell replied, “Fine by me” – a phrase he would repeat several times throughout the 15 minute hearing.

Irving woman questioned about death of child

Friday, May 20th, 2011

An Irving woman is reportedly being questioned is Massachusetts about the death of a six year old boy whose body was found along a dirt road in Maine on Saturday.

Authorities in New England have not confirmed that the woman is 42 year old Juliane Hughes McCrery or that the boy is her son, Camden Pierce Hughes. But friends and family is North Texas said they believe that to be the case.

McCrery’s ex husband, Paul McCrery said, said Wednesday that his son “found out that he lost his brother today.” He declined to comment further.

Irving police confirmed that they were contacted by Massachusetts state police Wednesday morning regarding the case.

“They had people that they were talking to or were somehow involved in their case that they wanted to see if there were any Irving ties, if they lived here or currently lived here,” said Irving police spokesman John Argumaniz. “Our officers are trying to assist with that.”

Argumaniz said his department had few other details about the case and the possible Irving connection.

The boy’s body was discovered Saturday on a dirt road in South Berwick, a town on the New Hampshire border. The story generated widespread interest and media coverage.

Police have labeled his death suspicious. In trying to determine his identity, investigators issued a computer enhanced image depicting a boy with blond hair and blue eyes. Police believe he was about 4 to 6 years old.

A telephone tip led police to the woman Wednesday at a Highway rest stop in Chelmsford, Mass.

Massachusetts state police spokesman David Procopio says a recent development has led to New Hampshire prosecutors taking control of the case. He declined to elaborate. State police detectives from Maine are also involved in the probe.

According to the Boston Globe, McCrery was taken to a local hospital for a “medical evaluation” after questioning at the State Police Barracks in Concord, Mass.

The Globe reported that investigators were trying to determine whether Camden was killed in New Hampshire and then transported to Maine.

McCrery’s Texas criminal record included Dallas prostitution and drug charges. She pleaded no contest and received deferred adjudication probation in both cases, according to records.

Robert Miller of Irving said he has known McCrery for over 25 years and dated her on and off in recent years. He said he last saw McCrery last week and spoke to her Tuesday, at which time she gave no indication that she was in New England.

“She had been sick, and she still sounded sick, and I asked her if they were coming by after work, and she said she didn’t know.” Miller said.

Miller said McCrery worked delivering auto parts in the Dallas area. He said that Camden was enrolled in kindergarten in Irving, and that he, too, had been sick recently.

“I know she wouldn’t hurt him intentionally in any way,” Miller said. “I don’t know what she was doing up there.”

Jail Visits Reduced To Lift Staff Burden

Saturday, January 15th, 2011

Dallas County jail inmates will be limited to two a week and tracking will be improved with the use of a computer tracking system. While many gathered with family to celebrate on Christmas morning, Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price was at the jail, observing how effectively the inmate visitation process was working.

Price returned the following day and discovered a new inefficiency that he says he’s already begun to fix. The veteran commissioner, the county’s jail czar said he noticed that certain visitors showed up both days in violation of the sheriff’s visitation policy that says they get only one visit at the jail per week.

Officers must escort inmates to and from visiting booths every day, he said. That’s a severe drain on valuable resources during a budget crisis. In response authorities have arranged to have five computers brought in to track visitors at each of the five jails to make sure visitors are following procedures.

DNA Solves Two Decade Old Murder

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

Cold case clues may now affect punishment of unrelated charges. DNA evidence links Joseph Houston Jr. to the rape of a woman at knifepoint in 1984. DNA saved in another case connects Dewayne Douglas Willis to the 1983 sexual assault of a 12 year old girl.

Dallas police solved those cases more than two decades after the assaults were committed, but neither man will be arrested or tired for those crimes because the statute of limitations of sexual assault in the 1980s was only five years. But a change in state law now allows that DNA match to be part of a persons criminal record and can be part ofthe punishment phase of an unrelated case when the suspect is convicted, Houston and Willis have been arrested on new charges and will likely be the first defendants in Texas affected by the change in the law if they are convicted.

Stolen Items Used To Post Bond For Armed Robbery

Sunday, November 21st, 2010

Dallas police officers moved quickly to arrest a violent felon suspected of posing as a pest control worker with an accomplice and robbing an Oak Lawn woman and her sister at gunpoint of thousands of dollars in jewelry. So Dallas officers and the victims were disgusted to learn that Moses Emmanuel Coppin, also a sex offender, is back on the streets after spending only days in the Dallas County Jail last week. i just can’t believe this guy is out already, said Alicia Madrigal, who believes Coppin is one of the men who robbed her. he’s going to do it again, I think he needs to be in jail for life.

Court officals report $300,000 bail set for Coppin last week by two magistrates is on the relatively high end of Dallas County bail guidelines for the charges he faces. Bail at that level is often enough to keep a criminal behind bars for an extended period. What’s unusual about it is that they make the baiil, said State District Judge Don Adams, the presiding felony court judge. “Most people don’t have that kind of money.”

In court documents dated Nov. 4th coppin wrote that his monthly income is $2,500. he wrote that the value of his assets is $100,000. The very next day, Delta Bail Bonds posted the 300,000 bond. Bond company is Dallas will usually expect 10% down, but many criminal attorneys in Dallas can post bond for their clients, which can eliminate teh 10% down and most attorneys will negotiate payment plans.
